Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival 2014

With mere days until my due date (and feeling a bit like a pumpkin myself) but still wanting to get out do something German with my mom, we went to the annual pumpkin festival at the Ludwigsburg Palace over the weekend. Similarly to last year, we lucked out with beautiful, warm weather. This year's theme was royalty, so all the displays featured kings or queens -- Elvis ("The King"), a lion ("king" of the jungle), a queen bee in her hive, and other squash-y homages to sovereigns. We chowed down on everything pumpkin: roasted spiced pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pasta dishes and even sipped some pumpkin wine. It was crazy crowded, but we still had fun and afterwards took a walk through the fairy tale garden.

Walking (more like hiking) from our parking spot to the palace gates.

The palace gardens were spectacular!

Oh, baby!

The palace is a popular site for weddings and we saw some heart balloons in the air that had been released by a wedding party (I made an educated guess as to which ones were the bride and groom's!).

Time to see the pumpkins!

The biggest pumpkin this year!

Oh wait, that's not a pumpkin under my shirt?

Royalty for a day.

Debating whose belly is bigger, mine or King Frederick I of Wurttemburg's.
